One of my key aims as a LinkedIn Trainer is to teach people how to support their business connections more effectively through LinkedIn and I thought the above picture kind of summed it up. If you all work closely together in your business circle/networking groups and help each other out through various means, all of you will gain through increased business and referrals, and then your businesses will flourish and grow. You cannot work alone and truly succeed.
Q – BUT HOW DO I HELP MY BUSINESS CONNECTIONS THROUGH LINKEDIN?
A – ENDORSING EACH OTHER’S SKILLS ON LINKEDIN
In my talks, I highlight the importance of endorsing the skills of your business connections. It is so simple, quick and easy to do.
Q – HOW DO I ENDORSE MY BUSINESS CONNECTIONS?
You just go to that particular business connection’s profile and then scroll down to the Section titled “Skills and Endorsements” and then you just click the little plus sign beside each Skill listed that you want to endorse someone for.
Be aware that only the top 10 most endorsed Skills are clearly listed on a connection’s profile. Always check that you have endorsed every possible Skill that you can genuinely endorse someone for.
When I draft someone’s LinkedIn Profile, I think very carefully what 50 skills I want my clients to be recognised and endorsed for. Be careful though as LinkedIn can also suggest Skills to endorse someone for even though they are not on that person’s profile, but those suggested skills may not fit with that person’s profile and it can then show a lack of interest to the recipient of that particular endorsement.
Q – WHAT DOES ENDORSING MY BUSINESS CONNECTION ACHIEVE?
A – SOCIAL VALIDATION AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SEARCHABILITY
Accumulating a large number of endorsements for a skill adds credibility to your LinkedIn profile, and it is extremely powerful. It shows that your professional connections recognize you for that particular skill. People are more inclined to believe other people’s testimony about your skills than your own assertion.
Endorsements actually affect LinkedIn’s algorithm and help you move higher up in the search results for those particular skills listed on your profile (keywords). For example, if you had a hundred endorsements for a specific keyword and somebody else with the same keyword only had twenty five then you could potentially show up higher in the search results. Therefore that potential client could then find you before your competitors, thanks to your clients and business connections endorsing you for your skills.
Q – WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ENDORSE MY BUSINESS CONNECTION?
A – LINKEDIN SENDS THEM A NOTIFICATION THAT YOU HAVE ENDORSED
THEM FOR A SKILL OR CERTAIN SKILLS
It is polite to thank your client/business connection for the endorsement and that can lead to re-opening a conversation between yourselves and that particular connection. It may also result in them reciprocating, if they feel able to endorse some of your skills.
TIP – Help each other to grow your respective
businesses by endorsing your business connections on a very regular basis.
